There are regular direct trains to York from London Kings Cross (2 hours), Edinburgh (2.5 hours), Manchester (1.5 hours), Birmingham (2 hours), Leeds (0.5 hours) and many other British cities. Train times can be found at www.nationalrail.co.uk/ Particularly for journeys to and from London, it is considerably cheaper to book ahead and / or travel at off-peak times.
From York station, a taxi to the Garden House costs around £5.
Alternatively, it is a pleasant 25-30 minute walk along the river. Exit left out of the station, past the large hotel and turn left into Leeman Road. Cut down the far side of the post office depot to the river. Cross the bridge and then walk upstream (i.e. with the river on your left). At the next bridge walk up on to the road and away from the river. The JRCT entrance is second on the left, follow the signs round through the car park to the Garden House.
A1 Travelling North
Leave the A1 on the A64 towards York. Turn onto the A1237 outer ring road signposted York (North). Continue until the A59 roundabout and then turn off right towards York (Acomb). After a mile or so you will reach a set of traffic lights with a left filter: turn left here onto Water End. After the road crosses the river, the entrance gate to the Garden House is the second opening on the left. Follow the drive past the first set of buildings and down to the Garden House at the end of the car park.
A1 Travelling South
Leave the A1 on the A59 towards York. After crossing the ring road (A1237) continue as above.
