JRCT is an independent, endowed foundation.

The Trust’s resources come from a portfolio of investments, almost entirely held, directly and indirectly, in UK and overseas equities.

The Trust aims to make grants at a level that is sustainable in real spending terms.

Responsible and ethical investment

JRCT has had a long-standing interest in the ethics of investment, with our first policy statement being agreed by the board in 1975.

We believe that the most effective way to align our investments with our values is to use fund managers who take a responsible investment approach.

Our investment strategy focuses on supporting sustainable companies which operate with integrity and whose products or services meet the basic needs of people and protect the natural environment on which we all depend, particularly including those offering solutions to climate change, resource constraints, and biodiversity loss.

We seek to avoid investing in fossil fuels, armaments, gambling, tobacco, new nuclear power, bonds from oppressive or high-military-spending states, unethical extractive industries, and companies profiting from the occupation of Palestine.

We recognise that ethics are not always clear-cut and that difficult judgements need to be made. We actively engage with companies to encourage better practices and will divest if necessary, sharing our expectations with fund managers and collaborating with other investors to promote responsible investment. You can read more about our investment policy below.
